Session 7 FAMILY HURTS

What a Family Should be

·             The family is the smallest and most important unit of society because it affects who its people are, and what its people become.

·             God instituted the family to give unconditional love, protection, safety and care.

What Happened?

·                             Many family experiences cause hurts ( Gen 37:2-28)

-       Satan likes to use those closest to us to cause pain and break trust.

-       Satan uses: divorce, abuse, child rebellion, lack of love or affection, lack of care, lack of time invested together, selfishness, unfaithfulness, depression, anger

“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”  Eph 6:4

Hurts must be dealt with because they affect your life.

Deeply moved at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep.  He went to his private room and wept there.” Gen 43:30

Nothing can take away the pain of unresolved issues

Years after Joseph had left his family, the pain of those hurts was still fresh.

Hurts must be dealt with because how we view our parents is ultimately how we will view God, and how we believe God views us.Finally, how you relate to your family members will affect how you will act and react in other relationships.

How to deal with the family hurts:

        ·       Read Gen 45:1-15

·       You must forgive those who hurt you, and decide not to hold their offense against them.

·       Ask God to help you forgive. Matt 6:14

·       Repent of any involvement you have had in family conflicts.

·       Ask God to heal your heart.

·       Ask God to restore the broken relationships.

Session 6 INNER HEALING / HOW TO HEAL BROKEN RELATIONSHIP

No Man is An Island

God created man to be in relationship with God and other people.

Gen 2:18

God wants us to:

-       marry someone of the opposite sex

-       have a family

-       be in relationship with other people

-       communicate openly

-       work with others

-       be appreciated

-       be loved and understood in our relationships

Satan Works to Destroy Relationships

Satan destroys people by driving wedges in their relationship with others.

-       the first broken relationships occured in Genesis 3:1-24

-       Satan drove a wedge of lies and mistrust between man and God, then tricked Adam and Eve into rebellion against God’s command (sin).

Satan uses the failings of others to create hurts and walls that close us off from others.

How do we hurt people? The same way people hurt us!

          Misconceptions

          Unfaithfulness- Rejection

          Pride- Egotism

          Abusive situations

          Manipulation

What happens when we hurt people? The same thing when people hurt us!

          Unforgiveness                                      Disappointment

          Accusation- Blame                                       Anger

          Resentment                                                   Bitterness

          Bottling up                                                     Fear

          Mistrust                                                             Jealousy

          Envy                                                      Gossip

          Slander

Wounds are a result of the hurts we go through in life.

In Isaiah 61:1-3 we can identify six types of wounded persons in these verses:

 1.      The downcast -  poor in spirit; they complain about everything and everybody.

2.      The heart broken – these are those who have suffered and can never forget their sorrows; they are people who live in the past.

3.      The captives-  these people have drug, alcohol, and pornography addictions. They are lazy, conformists, etc.

4.      The prisoners-  these are prisoners of their own thoughts and ideas.  They can’t change their way of thinking.  They say,” That’s the way I am and nobody can change me.  You must accept me no matter how bad I am.”

5.      The mourners-  the mourners are those who lost a loved one and cry all the time.  They blame God for the deaths of their loved ones.

6.      The worriers-  They are always worried about terrorists destroying the world and always worry about everything and everybody.

Should I forgive the person who hurt me?

          - It’s a command- we can’t love God and hate people (1 John 4:19-21)

          - It’s what God would do (Luke 6:27-36)

          - Forgiving others sets you free from strongholds (2 Cor 10:4)

          - God won’t forgive you if you don’t forgive others. (Matt 18:21-35)

 Steps to Receiving Healing

 1.     Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to your mind the people who hurt you.

2.     Recognize that you have things against people (offenses) and

that you are sinning by holding on to these wrong attitudes.

3.     Forgive those who hurt you from your heart and decide to

release the offense.  You might even need to forgive yourself.

-       Forgiveness is a lifestyle

-       You are truly healed when you forgive someone.  Forgiveness may open the door to a restored relationship.

-       Realize that people will always fail you, but God will never fail you.

-       Realize that we wrestle not against flesh and blood (Eph 6:12)

-       Our only enemy is Satan, not people!

     4.  Allow/ask God to heal you.

Session 1 OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

 (Luke 19:1-3)

Zacchaeus went to where Jesus was, but his LIMITATIONS kept him from seeing Jesus.

·       What are the LIMITATIONS that may keep you from seeing Jesus and finding true life?

·       In order for the Encounter to work, you must DETERMINE that you want to see Jesus more than you want those things that limit you.

 (Luke 19:4)

Zacchaeus REALIZED that he needed to see Jesus if he hoped to be different, so he made the extra effort to climb a tree.

 ·       Will you beCONTENTED to stay as you are, or will you decide to reach higher, ignoring distractions, to meet Jesus and be changed?

(Luke 19:5)

Jesus knew Zacchaeus’ effort and Jesus STOPPED to minister to Zacchaeus.

 ·       When Jesus sees your efforts to SEARCH for Him, He will stay at your house (body/spirit).

·       “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

     (Matthew 7:7; see also Matt.5:6).

 (Luke 19:6)

Zacchaeus WELCOMED Jesus gladly, and though people muttered, salvation came to him.

·       Would you really be here if your old way of life was really SATISFYING you and making you happy?

(Luke 19:1-3)
