No Man is An Island
God created man to be in relationship with God and other people.
Gen 2:18
God wants us to:
- marry someone of the opposite sex
- have a family
- be in relationship with other people
- communicate openly
- work with others
- be appreciated
- be loved and understood in our relationships
Satan Works to Destroy Relationships
Satan destroys people by driving wedges in their relationship with others.
- the first broken relationships occured in Genesis 3:1-24
- Satan drove a wedge of lies and mistrust between man and God, then tricked Adam and Eve into rebellion against God’s command (sin).
Satan uses the failings of others to create hurts and walls that close us off from others.
How do we hurt people? The same way people hurt us!
Misconceptions
Unfaithfulness- Rejection
Pride- Egotism
Abusive situations
Manipulation
What happens when we hurt people? The same thing when people hurt us!
Unforgiveness Disappointment
Accusation- Blame Anger
Resentment Bitterness
Bottling up Fear
Mistrust Jealousy
Envy Gossip
Slander
Wounds are a result of the hurts we go through in life.
In Isaiah 61:1-3 we can identify six types of wounded persons in these verses:
1. The downcast - poor in spirit; they complain about everything and everybody.
2. The heart broken – these are those who have suffered and can never forget their sorrows; they are people who live in the past.
3. The captives- these people have drug, alcohol, and pornography addictions. They are lazy, conformists, etc.
4. The prisoners- these are prisoners of their own thoughts and ideas. They can’t change their way of thinking. They say,” That’s the way I am and nobody can change me. You must accept me no matter how bad I am.”
5. The mourners- the mourners are those who lost a loved one and cry all the time. They blame God for the deaths of their loved ones.
6. The worriers- They are always worried about terrorists destroying the world and always worry about everything and everybody.
Should I forgive the person who hurt me?
- It’s a command- we can’t love God and hate people (1 John 4:19-21)
- It’s what God would do (Luke 6:27-36)
- Forgiving others sets you free from strongholds (2 Cor 10:4)
- God won’t forgive you if you don’t forgive others. (Matt 18:21-35)
Steps to Receiving Healing
1. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to your mind the people who hurt you.
2. Recognize that you have things against people (offenses) and
that you are sinning by holding on to these wrong attitudes.
3. Forgive those who hurt you from your heart and decide to
release the offense. You might even need to forgive yourself.
- Forgiveness is a lifestyle
- You are truly healed when you forgive someone. Forgiveness may open the door to a restored relationship.
- Realize that people will always fail you, but God will never fail you.
- Realize that we wrestle not against flesh and blood (Eph 6:12)
- Our only enemy is Satan, not people!
4. Allow/ask God to heal you.
